Duties

The incumbent provides program support assistance necessary to support the office of the Chief, Police Service, assists with the administrative functions of the operations section, and is the Facility Key Control Custodian for the Fresno VA Central California Healthcare System. Receives and screens telephone calls and visitors, using sound judgment as to the relative importance of each call and visit and determines what section of the Police Service the caller or visitor should be referred to. Receives incoming mail and makes the appropriate distribution within the service. The incumbent must have sufficient knowledge of all the services available so he/she can effectively refer callers/visitors and distribute incoming mail. When necessary the incumbent must be able to supply all or most of the information needed by the caller, including answering substantive questions requiring minimal research or technical knowledge.

  • Serves as the primary timekeeper, inputting time and attendance information on all assigned employees into an automated timekeeping system.
  • Ensures the Chief is briefed daily on the day's activities and any matters or concerns about scheduled meetings.
  • Serves as the service's Automated Data Processing Account Coordinator (ADPAC) responsible for authorizing access and menu options to the medical center's network and VISTA computer systems.
  • Authorizes, inventories, and reviews authorized keys and enters status of keys in an automated key control system.
  • Type letters, memorandums, reports, in-service policy memorandums and decision papers generated by the Chief, Police Service.
  • Exercises control over the Chiefs appointment calendar scheduling appointments, interviews, meetings, and conferences when needed.

Work Schedule: M-F 8:00 am - 16:30 pm.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by 11:59 PM (EST) Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks (1 year) must also meet time-in-grade requirements; OR have a preference eligibility that allows them to skip the time-in-grade restriction (supporting documentation required prior to vacancy closure).

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have 52 weeks (1 year) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: correspondence and data collection, scheduling and information control, time-keeper duties, automated data processing, account coordinator (ADPAC), filing system, release of information officer, official travel coordinator, badge control and issue, administrative court liaison officer, and facility key control custodian, etc. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in Federal service. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week for 52 weeks. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. You will be rated on the following competencies based on your application for this position:

  • Ability to interpret written instructions, polices and procedures.

Education: There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily performed in an office environment and requires alternating periods of walking and sedentary work. Manual dexterity is required for operating office equipment. Typing and computer operation may involve long periods of hand and wrist movement. Work is performed primarily in an office setting which is adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically.
