This Food Service Worker Supervisor position is located in the Nutrition & Food Service at the VA Central CA Healthcare System (VACCHCS), in Fresno, CA. The incumbent directs subordinates' work to conform to Nutrition & Food Service and VACCHCS goals, procedures and policies. Incumbent has the responsibility for all tray, dining room, cafeteria food service to inpatients, outpatients, NHCU residents, guests, Domiciliary residents, volunteers, and students. Major duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the attendance, production, and efficiency of Food Service Workers and Work Leaders;

  • Scheduling and supervising food service workers, planning and scheduling employee leave and making daily adjustments in the duty schedule during periods of leave;

  • Ensuring patient tray tickets and select menus are generated, completed, and charted to serve patient meal selections in several settings including restaurant style, cafeteria style, and bulk food meal service;

  • Supervising the delivery of subsistence, supplies and equipment, preparation, sanitation, and the service and delivery of patient meals and supplements;

  • Coordinating/directing daily operation of the food service areas using standards, procedures, diet manual, modified menus and production sheets;

  • Ensuring compliance with HACCP guidelines, procedures, and VACO policies to ensure food safety in food service and storage;

  • Managing nourishment delivery to patients and the sanitation program, including ware washing, equipment cleaning, and overall sanitation of the department;

  • Ensuring the proper usage and care of all food service equipment and ensuring employees are knowledgeable in the equipment's usage and care;

  • Counseling employees as necessary, addressing informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and Union representative;

  • Developing, documenting, and evaluating standards of work performance. Observing subordinate employees' work and following instructions, provide suggestions and guidance as required.

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements outlined below. The screen-out element for this position is:

-Ability to the job of a Food Service Worker Supervisor without more than normal supervision. This includes performing activities such as: Managing the attendance, production, and efficiency of Food Service Workers and Work Leaders; Scheduling and supervising food service workers, planning and scheduling employee leave and making daily adjustments in the duty schedule during periods of leave; Coordinating/directing daily operation of the food service areas using standards, procedures, diet manual, modified menus and production sheets; Ensuring compliance with HACCP guidelines, procedures, and VACO policies to ensure food safety in food service and storage; Managing nourishment delivery to patients and the sanitation program, including ware washing, equipment cleaning, and overall sanitation of the department; Ensuring the proper usage and care of all food service equipment and ensuring employees are knowledgeable in the equipment's usage and care.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements:Food service workers at this grade level perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort. They are subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) unassisted (e.g., pushing small carts of dirty dishes) and occasionally lift or move objects weighing more than 9 kilograms (20 pounds) (e.g., filling beverage dispensers) with the assistance of other workers. In addition food service workers at this level are required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing, and delivering supplies.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
